What is Campral?

by admin on February 7, 2009

Campral is an FDA-approved drug that has been on the market for about two and a half years. There are clinical trials that indicate it helps people maintain abstinence when used in conjunction with therapy and support groups. It is important to note that this drug does not make you stop drinking, it is only thought to be able to help maintain abstinence after you have stopped. Campral has been proven to reduce the psychological stressors associated with post acute withdrawal syndrome. Campral is not addictive has been shown to help with anxiety and sleep disturbances and can be used by people with mild liver dysfunction.

The exact mechanism of how it works is not really understood. It is thought to help restore the balance of chemicals in the brain and prevent symptoms that may lead some people to drink, post acute withdrawal syndrome,(PAWS). Campral should only be considered by people who have actually stopped drinking and are in counseling or paticipating in support groups. It must be emphasized that this is not a pill to allow you to drink safely. Please consult your doctor for the appropriateness of Campral

Campral plus psychosocial therapy proved superior to placebo plus psychosocial therapy in maintaining abstinence, as indicated by a greater percentage of subjects being assessed as continuously abstinent throughout treatment.

It is good to know that side effects for Campral is generally mild with the most frequently reported side effect being diarrhea.
