Drinking And Drugging Friends: Who Have You Been Inviting Into Your Life?

by admin on June 5, 2009

People are in our lives because we invite them to be there. Either we do this proactively, or passively.

We tend to hang around with people who share our common interests, and when it comes to drinking and drugging that common interest is the substance itself.

A mistake people often make an early drug or alcohol addiction recovery is that they can hang around with the same friends and not drink or drug. What they fail to realize is that it is the drinking and drugging that is the basis of this friendship and without a focus on There is seldom anything left. A lot of people were drawn to the using substances because they finally found a group of people who could “understand them”.

While that might have been true at first, the reality is the drug and alcohol use quickly overtook the friendship relationship and a relationship with drugs and alcohol became primary not the friendship with people.

People use drugs and alcohol start spending more and more time and energy trying to locate the drug that, get high from add, or recover from its use. That is defining characteristic of addiction.

Now and early addiction recovery, the problem is that a relapse trigger is defined as any person, place, or situation in which drug or alcohol use occurred, or has thoughts of associations with it. Think about your old drinking and drugging pals. Can you now see why the advice is given to not hang around with your former using friends?

It is an invitation to disaster. Now the reality of the world is such that you will be exposed to drinking and drugging, but a sane person would limit their exposure. That does not include hanging around with a group of people whose sole purpose was to drink and use drugs.  It is vital for your continuing care to build a new social support network.
