5 Tips For Overcoming Depression

by michellechallenges on October 23, 2009

When you feel depressed, motivating yourself turns out to be a complicated job.

Moreover, if things worsen, then you feel as if there is none by your side, none to support you…you are ALONE in this world. Overcoming depression is not a cakewalk but with strong determination on your part, you are sure to succeed. Most of us get depressed at the simple thought that we don’t have everything in life. Some crave for materialistic pleasures while some run after sexual pleasures. And if they don’t get it they become depressed. Fortunately a couple of these problems can be eased by altering your negative thoughts into positive ones and learning to accept your present situation with ease.

So, here we go…

1. When you feel depressed, it is quite obvious that all your thoughts as well as mood are focused on you. Try diverting your attention to helping someone else. You may start off by visiting an elderly neighbor, volunteering for your nearby charity and much more. It does help you in overcoming depression as you are so engrossed with them that you forget your own worries and grief. In other words, it feels good to help others.

2. Exercise! Its true, exercise is believed to be the instant mood lifter. Try taking a brisk walk for 40 minutes early in the morning or try jogging for twenty minutes in your leisure hours. If you’re obese and not in the habit of exercising, try starting off with a fifteen minute walk followed by increasing it slowly up to 30 and then 40 minutes.

3. Foods containing rich sources of sugar and caffeine can lead to mood swings. Avoid consuming these substances.

4. Remember that life brings with it ups and downs. That means that even if you are experiencing a bad time now ,it will not last forever. Remember that you are not a failure…don’t get depressed considering yourself a failure over and over again.

5. Try focusing on positive thoughts. Look for a positive thing each and day and be thankful for providing you that precious gift. Don’t complain about what you don’t have, instead be grateful for the things bestowed on you.
