Teen drug abuse is a devastating thing, especially when it hit close to home. There are some things that a parent can watch for that may point to a possible drug problem.
The destruction that is caused to a teen life and the whole family from drugs is unlike anything else that your family will encounter. Finding out early and helping your child find help for their drug use is an important step to avoiding the massive destruction that drugs can do to your family.
7 Warning Signs Your Teen Might Be Using Drugs
1. Appearing unkempt or a deterioration of hygiene. Does the child that was once fastidious in their cleanliness and appearance suddenly appear unkempt? Your child may appear as if there is a lack of attention paid to their appearance and the normal hygiene activities that they once practiced. Of course, this is a cause for concern and it should cause parents to start talking to their children about what is happening in their lives that could explain the lack of attention in appearance.
2. Slipping grades. Many times a good student will drop dramatically in the grades that they are receiving in school. One thing is clear when you see a drop in grades and that is that something is distracting and causing your child to lose their focus on their schoolwork. The problem could be drugs. Start talking to your child to find out why their grades have dropped.
3. Suddenly becoming violent or having more frequent outbursts at home. Teens are naturally dramatic people, but when the outbursts in your home become more frequent or turn violent, drugs might be the problem.
4. Weight loss. Many children will begin to neglect eating when they are using drugs which will result in a drop in weight. If you notice a sudden change in your child’s weight, drugs might be the reason.
5. Using eye wash. The use of products that are designed to remove redness from the eyes is a common trait among those who are using drugs. Your child may be attempting to mask the physical signs of their drug use with these products.
6. Finding drug paraphernalia in your child’s room or in their belongings. This may seem like it is an obvious sign that a child is using drugs, but you would be surprised at how many parents turn a blind eye to this symptom.
7. Missing cash or valuables in your home. This may be a sign that your child is stealing from you to pay for their drugs.
It is important to open lines of communication on the topic of drug use and abuse with your children before there is evidence of a drug problem.
