One of the most common reasons why teenagers take drugs is due to depression. Drug abuse among teenagers is on the increase, and whatever the igniting factor is, the consequences of teenage drug abuse is tragic. Not only street drug but prescription drugs is a multi faceted problem that concerned parents have to face on a daily basis.
Teenagers have to face numerous challenges but they also need to understand that they have to face the responsibility for their actions. Teenage years are probably the most delicate as they have to start becoming independent and have to face the challenges that life presents to them and unfortunately there are those that just don’t make the grade and this is when they start to seek solutions to their problems by taking chemical substances such as alcohol, drugs and tobacco.

So parents in order to raise a drug free teenager you firstly need to put your fears aside and take the bull by the horns as there are ways to keep your teenager drug free. If they have already experimented then you need to find out what factor caused them to take drugs. Factors such as bad relationships with parents, school peers, friends, self image, poor school performance, violence at school or home can all be trigger points for a teenager to apt out of reality and lose themselves in a world of drugs.
When it comes to teenage drug use remember parent’s helping with prevention is the ideal solution. Here are some ideas:
• Always be there for your teenager especially when they need to get out of a bad situation
• Get to know your child’s friends as well as the friends parents as this will always keep you in the know of where your child is and what your child is doing
• Keep connected as what your child does after school
• Parents must always be a role model to their teenagers
• When your teenager goes out ask them who are they going with and what their plans are
Prevent your teenager from going off the rails by just always being there for them and most of all make sure you create an open relationship with your teenager.
