Fun Things To Do In Addiction Recovery, It Can’t Be All Work

by michellechallenges on October 14, 2009

There may come a point in your recovery, be it early in recovery are a little later long, the question will arise ‘How do I have fun?’

Sadly, we may have been so involved in the time-consuming task of drinking and drugging, recovering from its effects, and looking for more, that the aspect of just having simple fun in our life may of escaped us. perhaps that is why we got involved with drinking and drugging in the first place just have fun. But how long as it been since are use to fill that purpose?

For a lot of people stopping the drinking and drugging will create a huge time for it in their lives. Hopefully, you have worked out a Continuing Care and Relapse Prevention Plan to help you deal with boredom and isolation. But that is not necessarily what this section is about.
We want to have fun!

Oddly enough, it may take a little work to learn how to have fun. We may have to become a little adventuress, trying out new recreational activities and taking risks on meeting new people. You might want to print off the checklists that will follow in sit down with a highlighter and mark off potential activities.

Here are 5 things you can do and questions you can ask yourself to help you actually engage in fun activities rather than just think about them:

1. Schedule time for fun and recreation – that’s right, schedule it writing to your weekly activities and don’t skip it.

2. Things you always wanted to do – think about things that you have always wanted to but never had time for in your busy in hectic former life of using. Go do them. my first year in recovery, I went scuba diving, and jumped out of an airplane ( with a parachute).

3. Remove your limitations – try not to think in terms of being too old or too young, or something costing too much, find ways to accomplish and remove blocks to participating in the fun things you like to do.

4. Keep an open ear – pay attention to articles in magazines, people talking about their own leisure activities, and generate or adapt some of these ideas for yourself.

5. Be spontaneous – is some fun crazy thought enters your mind one not do it right away? Don’t procrastinate. I remember being bored to tears accompanying my girlfriend on an endless round of shopping in chores. On the spur the moment I pulled into a car wash, she got a little mad at first because it was cutting into her time. As we started into the car wash I told her I didn’t care about the car, I just want to kiss and snuggle with her for a little bit. We did. Stupid? Spontaneous?

Fun?…you betcha.
