Several different factors combine to influence addiction. The vast majority of people don’t really get a clear picture about why some people get addicted to drugs or alcohol and others don’t. One thing we do know is that addiction does not come about because someone is morally weak.
People who are not familiar with addiction often believe that drug addicts should just be able to stop on their own. The fact of the matter is, it is much more complex than that drug addiction is not exclusively behavioral in nature. In other words there are many complex factors that combine lead to a very difficult problem to handle.
Due to the advance of new brain imaging technology, and science moving forward in general, we have a much clearer idea of drug and alcohol addiction. There is no single factor that one can point to and say "Aha this is the cause of drug addiction".
Here are the factors in drug addiction:
1. Brain chemistry
2. Genetic factors
3. The home environment and family associations
4. Peer pressure in school
5. The method of drug administration
6. Age of first use
It is a combination of these various factors that can lead up in totality to drug addiction. Some factors may have more influence on a particular individual than others. Drug addiction is a unique combination of various factors.
Addiction treatment must take all these factors into consideration and treat them all.
