One of the most critical factors in addiction treatment is initiating the process of change. There is definitely truth to the old axiom that the same person will drink or drug again. The person starts from a point of denial or simple lack of awareness the problem even exists, and moves on to the point where they recognize the problem. At the point of problem is recognized, a decision needs to be made on whether they want to change their behavior or not. Surprisingly, many people with addiction problems are entirely aware that they do have the addiction problem, but they have simply decided that now is not the right time to change.

Professional counseling can be of assistance in motivating and facilitating change to the various stages of recovery. The process of change is now understood to involve psychological, sociological, and biological processes and variables. The different degree of capability each person brings to the change process is affected by these combinations. Professional counseling to a great degree, can be considered to be the agent of change.

I think that addiction counseling can be very helpful in treating addiction. But, I think that the more important thing to do in treatment is to find out the original reason WHY the person started drinking, or doing drugs in the FIRST place.

Thanks for the post.
Counselling is what got me into treatment in the first place. Eventually I am sure I would have found myself in treatment of some sort, hopefully before I did. I was glad, however, to have finallly found it when I did.
