Alcoholism is a disease that destroys lives. The alcoholic suffers and so does his family. An alcoholic has lost the ability to control his drinking. He craves alcohol and is physically dependent upon it. There is no cure for alcoholism. However, today there is effective treatment for alcoholics.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states that 700,000 people in the United States receive treatment for alcoholism each day. Treatment for alcoholics is readily available in most locations for free thanks to twelve step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous. This program is open to anyone who needs help to stop drinking. In large cities, one can usually find an AA meeting every day at various hours throughout the day in locations throughout the city. Smaller towns may not offer meetings as often, but if you can find out where and when the nearest AA meetings are, it will be a big help to you even if you choose other forms of treatment for your alcoholism.
For many, attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings is not enough help. For those people, outpatient and inpatient treatment is available. This treatment for alcoholics is covered by insurance in some cases. Some states provide free outpatient treatment to those who cannot afford to pay for it. If you need help to stop drinking, don’t let lack of funds prevent you from seeking help. Plenty of help is available from a variety of sources if you seek it out.
Alcoholism is a battle you will have to fight for the rest of your life. Even if you go for years without a drink, there is always a risk of relapse if you ever take that first drink. For this reason, therapy is a beneficial treatment for alcoholics. If you can uncover the cause of your drinking and learn coping skills to help you avoid the temptation to drink, your chances of staying sober over the long term are much greater.
There are also medications available for the treatment of alcoholics. These medicines help reduce the craving for alcohol, alleviate withdrawal symptoms, or make you sick if you drink alcohol. Ask your doctor if one of these medications could help you. Not every medication will work for all people, but when you are trying to stop drinking, it does not hurt to take all the help you can get.
Unfortunately, some people refuse to recognize they have a drinking problem. Their alcoholism may be so severe they feel like there is no hope. If you have a family member in such a situation, you must realize he is not capable of making rational choices for himself. You may need to stage an intervention which means you arrange all of the details related to treatment and get all of the family together to put pressure on him to go for help.
There are so many ways to get treatment for alcoholics. There is no reason to let alcohol destroy your life or your family. If you have a drinking problem, talk to your doctor about it or attend an AA meeting for initial help. If a friend or family member suffers with alcoholism, do not stand by and enable their addiction. Do what you can to get them the help they need when they are unable to make good choices for themselves.

Controlled drinking doesn’t make sense to me. It is like playing with fire. People should avoid it at all expenses
Useful info, thanks.
