In struggling to triumph over alcohol dependence, every alcoholic has to ask and answer some questions for themselves before they can begin to truly recover. Keep reading to learn what these all-important questions are.
Every day, millions of people take the first steps towards sobriety. However, before having the answers to these key questions, it is next to impossible to be successful in this effort.
To begin the process of alcohol recovery, these 5 questions must be asked, understood and answered – the answer to each is yes. This may sound all too simple, but these really are the keys to beginning recovery.
1. Do I have a problem? If so, is this problem alcohol?
Easier to ask than to answer, since we all have problems. The key here is to determine if your problems stem from your drinking. Alcoholics tend to want to believe that anything but alcohol is their real problem. Addiction, after all is characterized in part by denial. The answer here is yes if you’re even asking the question – so let’s proceed the next question.
2. Do I want to stop drinking?
Yes or no are the only acceptable answers here. There is no margin of error with abstinence. A lot of alcoholics realize that alcohol is the root cause of their problems, but have not yet been hurt badly enough to make them truly desire to stop drinking.
3. Is now the time to stop?
There are a lot of rationalizations alcoholics will use – I won’t bore you with them here, but it should suffice to say that these rationalizations are stopping you from entering recovery. The idea of abstinence is overwhelming to most alcoholics; and they will use any reason they can find to continue drinking.
4. Are you willing to develop a sobriety plan?
While making the decision to quit drinking is a good step, it’s not enough by itself to ensure recovery. A lot of alcoholics fail to make a recovery because they begin without having a plan for their recovery. No plan is every bit as bad as a poorly conceived one. You should seek help from qualified addiction professionals and/or support groups.
5. Are you ready to implement your plan?
Even the best plan in the world won’t get you anywhere if you don’t use it. Complacency is one of the most common reasons that alcoholics relapse. You need to be persistent and keep working towards recovery every single day.
