Spirituality in Addiction Treatment – Critical to Treatment?

by admin on January 4, 2009

The role of spirituality in addiction treatment and recovery is a bit of a hot potato.

Some think spirituaity is a critical component in drug abuse or alcoholism recovery. Others tend to believe that one’s spiritual beliefs (or lack of), should not be a barrier to addiction recovery.

Here is an article that addresses the role of spirituality in recovery by interviewing some professionals working in the field. This is the work of our friend Tammy Mastroberte, publisher and Editorial Director of Elevated Existence magazine.

I’m not a religious person, but I do know that having spirituality does help out. A friend of mine that I mentioned in another comment, he turned full christian overnight, and eventually settled for a spiritual belief that involves the better parts of most religions.

As a religious person, I find get strength and solace in know that there is a God and He can help me do great things. Now, this may not work for many people, but for a recovering addict, does it really hurt to give it a try? Nothing like a supreme power on your side to help things along the path of recovery.

I recently came across it on a blog The value of spirituality has largely been neglected in the teaching and practice of Western medicine. The concepts are applicable to most everyone.

Does Spirituality really hurt in treating the alcoholic cure? Nothing like a supreme power on your side to help things along the path of recovery.
